Joon Kwon

Hi! I'm an M.S. Robotics student at Carnegie Mellon University, working in the AirLab with Prof. Sebastian Scherer and Dr. Wenshan Wang.

Previously, I was a machine learning researcher at Boeing AI and a machine learning engineer at Nearthlab, and I earned my B.S. and M.S. in Aerospace Engineering at KAIST, where I was advised by Prof. Hyochoong Bang.

Research

My research aims to close the loop between multimodal perception and action. I want to build robots that perceive the world through multiple modalities (e.g., vision, touch, and inertial sensing), that estimate their own epistemic uncertainty, and that act to reduce this uncertainty while carrying out their tasks.

Projects

Oblique 3D map of the ACFA training site built in real time from one flight, with six casualty positions marked and the detector's camera frame for each shown above
Day, EO: one flight mapped in real time; six casualties reported within 0.8 m of their surveyed positions.
Oblique 3D thermal map of the ACFA site built at night from one infrared flight, with eleven casualty positions marked and the detector's thermal frame for each shown above
Night, thermal: the same site from one infrared flight; eleven casualties reported live.
Full wind-turbine blade reconstructed from stitched aerial frames
A complete blade, root to tip, stitched from dozens of aerial frames.
